The desire for more positive experience is itself a negative experience. Wanting positive experience is a negative experience; accepting negative experience is a positive experience.
The more you desperately want to be rich, the more poor and unworthy you feel, regardless of how much money you actually make.
The more you desperately want to be sexy and desired, the uglier you come to see yourself, regardless of your actual physical appearance.
The more you desperately want to be happy and loved, the lonelier and more afraid you become, regardless of those who surround you. The more you want to be spiritually enlightened, the more self-centered and shallow you become in trying to get there. When most people envision giving no fucks whatsoever, they imagine a kind of serene indifference to everything,.
Subtlety 1: Not giving a fuck does not mean being indifferent; it means being comfortable with being different. Subtlety 2: To not give a fuck about adversity, you must first give a fuck about something more important than adversity. I once heard an artist say that when a person has no problems, the mind automatically finds a way to invent some.
This is something called maturity. The idea of not giving a fuck is a simple way of reorienting our expectations for life and choosing what is important and what is not. The rich suffer because of their riches. The poor suffer because of their poverty. People without a family suffer because they have no family.
People with a family suffer because of their family. People who pursue worldly pleasures suffer because of their worldly pleasures. People who abstain from worldly pleasures suffer because of their abstention. Instead, hope for a life full of good problems. Sometimes those problems are simple: eating good food, traveling to some new place, winning at the new video game you just bought.
In fact, I believe we should make a habit of questioning them. Decision-making based on emotional intuition, without the aid of reason to keep it in line, pretty much always sucks.
What are you willing to struggle for? Despite my fantasizing about this for over half my lifetime, the reality never came to fruition. I just liked to imagine the summit. Humans often choose to dedicate large portions of their lives to seemingly useless or destructive causes. Now ask yourself why it bugs you. As a rule, people who are terrified of what others think about them are actually terrified of all the shitty things they think about themselves being reflected back at them. Because when you give better fucks, you get better problems.
And when you get better problems, you get a better life. Many people may be to blame for your unhappiness, but nobody is ever responsible for your unhappiness but you. This is because you always get to choose how you see things, how you react to things, how you value things. This too is normal and this too will be uncomfortable.
Three good speculations, maybe four, maybe even six if you are strongly attracted to that many all at once. My personal rule of thumb is to have no more than four going at any one time, and most often I keep the number to three or less — sometimes just one.
He was obviously familiar with the technique of shorting, in which you sell a stock before you own it, hoping the price will fall. A Starbucks barista receives twenty-four hours of training before being handed the keys to an espresso machine.
Most cars have a footrest to keep your left foot out of the way. This enables you to brace yourself in a corner when you need to by pushing on your left leg.
Arms You should be able to relax into the back of the seat and find that your arms are still bent when you hold the steering wheel. Keep sunglasses at the ready to handle low-lying sun and glare off a wet road. Avoid at all costs polarized sunglasses. When you place your foot on the accelerator or the brakes, feel the pressure through the tips of your toes rather than via the force in your thigh. Gently tense your calf muscles and ease up the ball of your foot, or curl your big toe slowly upwards, until you reach the biting point.
With only a light weight on the clutch pedal, forward motion will commence. Then, as you come off the accelerator you start to depress the clutch, but for those seeking heaven on a gearstick: leave a tiny touch of accelerator on — just enough to keep the revs hovering above idle and cushion the flow.
When you lift off the throttle in gear it cuts propulsion to the engine, but the internals, the pistons and other gubbins continue spinning, and the friction of these moving parts causes drag known as engine braking. When you do have to brake, the idea is to operate the pedal once with a consistent pressure, rather than a sequence of kangaroo jumps.
The tyre can generate a maximum force of 1. When a tyre contends with lateral cornering forces as well as longitudinal braking or acceleration forces, it develops less. We therefore separate the cornering process into three phases in order to maximise their potential: 1. Best braking takes place in a straight line, because weight transfers to the front tyres, which aids braking and initial turning power.
Best cornering takes place with no braking or throttle. You reduce braking as you start steering. The body of the car will lean over; the weight transfers to the outside tyres, creating maximum cornering power. Cornering power reduces as acceleration begins — and best acceleration happens in a straight line. When the front tyres skid, the car has a tendency to go straight on towards the outside of a corner despite your efforts to convince it otherwise. The car understeers.
When the rears let go, the car rotates into the corner far more than you asked it to in terms of the steering angle. It oversteers. Steering-Wheel Papers, the Earl of Cottenham. Drive to Win, by Carroll Smith. Tune to Win, by Carroll Smith. Police Roadcraft. The Highway Code. But for the most part, if you wanted to find out what some big investor was about to do, you needed to do a little bit of it with him.
One of his favorite books was actually called Complexity, by M. Mitchell Waldrop. Cook, now a professor of health care systems safety in Sweden. Richard P. Feynman, o que falar sobre? But in the air force we have a rule: check six.
Most airplanes are shot down that way. We work on projects for six weeks at a time, then we take two weeks off from scheduled work to roam and decompress. We started by working on things for as long as they took. Then we saw how projects never seemed to end. So we started time-boxing at three months. We found that was still too long. So we tried even shorter times. And we ended up here, in six-week cycles.
We iterated our way to what works for us. If you view an erratic backhand as a reflection of who you are, you will be upset. But you are not your backhand any more than a parent is his child. Why is it so easy for a child to pick up a foreign language?
Fighting the fantasy of old habits is what causes the conscientious tennis player to strain and tighten unnecessarily. My experience over the years is that the best way to quiet the mind is not by telling it to shut up, or by arguing with it, or criticizing it for criticizing you.
Fighting the mind does not work. What works best is learning to focus it. Winning is overcoming obstacles to reach a goal, but the value in winning is only as great as the value of the goal reached. The first kind sees most obstacles as insurmountable and walks away.
