So I bit the bullet and downloaded Dark Soul Vol. And wow, am I glad I did. Stefano is happily married and considers himself straight, but he is immediately attracted to Silvio.
The stories are also somewhat unusual in their construction. They follow a standard chronological narrative, but there are all kinds of unresolved story and character threads. For example, we never find out what happens to the dying Mafia Don in the first story. Is Vince going to be an important character throughout the series? The stories have this amazing texture and density, but we only get partial views of basic aspects like plot, motivations, etc.
I had to read the first few pages several times to get my bearings, because I felt thrown in at the deep end. But I kept reading anyway, because the writing was powerful and the characters were irresistible. Spadaro studied him, head tilted. It was still hard to breathe and he had no idea why. Stefano fought the urge to straighten his tie, fought harder against the urge to watch the Barracuda cut through the assembled groups of men.
Stefano could see why. That was all manner of disturbing. The relationship that develops between the two men is at times brutal literally so in the first story. And yet, by the end of the second story, I was convinced that more tender feelings could flourish between them as well. Silvio thrives on the combination of pain and pleasure, and Stefano instinctively responds:.
It fed the same dark arousal that claimed him when he watched the kind of porn where the actors wore not just lust on their faces, but pain or shame or both.
Whatever happened to Silvio, he sank into it without reservation, possibly even without self-awareness. What would it be like to have a lover like that? Somebody he could do this to, mix the pleasure with pain. Someone who would take it all and more and never consider him a controlling freak.
Although Silvio masks his vulnerable side and his softer emotional needs, by the end of the second story they have been revealed, both to the reader and to Stefano. I very much look forward to seeing how you concurrently explore the relationships and the criminal storyline. The protagonists have sex with other people in these stories.
The main characters are all part of the criminal underworld, which some readers will find objectionable.
So far the sex scenes are anything but vanilla one involves non-consensual acts. That is not cheap, and frankly, the price kept me from picking it up a while ago.
But I kept thinking about it, and for me the quality is worth the price. With all these caveats stipulated, I definitely recommend this series. Sunita has been reading romances almost as long as she has been reading. Her favorite genres these days are contemporary, category, and novels with romantic elements. She also reads SFF, mysteries, historical fiction, literary fiction, and the backs of cereal boxes.
Thanks for the detailed review of this book. I already have it on my kindle but did not read it. Now I will do it soon. No more hedging — time to add it to the TBR. And his writing was so well done that I was done with Vol 1 before I realized I had gotten that far. I wanted to make sure I communicated the non-romance aspects and the potential triggers, but I really hope that readers who think it sounds intriguing will give this series a try. The writing is terrific and the setting sucks you right in.
Reading Dark Soul reminded me of how much pleasure I get as a reader when I find something unexpected that is really rewarding and satisfying. I may read it…my reading pile has been a bore so why not :. No DRM, all formats, and the discount is good through January But as to your second point, the one thing this read is NOT is boring. Sunita : I have to say the premise of this story reminds me a lot about a story I read.
It was on fictionwise. Anyway it was a brutal mafia story and it was epic. We do not purchase all the books we review here. Some we receive from the authors, some we receive from the publisher, and some we receive through a third party service like Net Galley.

REVIEW: Dark Soul Vol. 1 by Aleksandr Voinov
Dark Soul series Love lights even the darkest soul. A killer's moral compass rarely points true, and among made men, being gay is a capital crime. But Silvio Spadaro, deadly prodigy and heir to a Family fortune, is determined to find his own way--at the feet of the man he loves or by the barrel of a gun -- no matter the dangers or costs. Stefano Marino lives a comfortable -- some might even say enviable -- life. As a mob boss at the top of the food chain, he has it all: money, respect, a beautiful wife he loves as much now as the day they wed. But he also has a turf war on his hands, and far too soft a heart for this dark business.
Dark Soul Volume 1
By Aleksandr Voinov. Stefano Marino is a made man, a happily married West Coast Mafia boss who travels east to await the death of a family patriarch. All the old hands have gathered—of course sharks will circle when there's blood in the water—but it's a new hand that draws Stefano's eye. Silvio "the Barracuda" Spadaro is protetto and heir to retired consigliere Gianbattista Falchi, and a made man in his own right. Among his underworld family, being gay is a capital crime, but the young killer has never much cared for rules. The only orders he follows are Battista's, whether on the killing field or in his bed.
