BIRKHOFF MACLANE ALGEBRA PDF

The Basic Library List Committee recommends this book for acquisition by undergraduate mathematics libraries. The book was written because the authors could find no adequate text to use with their students at Harvard. Both had learned "Modern Algebra" from van der Waerden's famous text originally published in One has to admire the insight of the authors in judging that the "modern" approach was the way of the future and their willingness to write a book that would be accessible to undergraduates. It was largely through this book, supplemented later by I. Herstein's Topics in Algebra , that the new algebraic ideas were incorporated into American mathematics education.

Well-written and memorably elegant proofs written by two of the modern pioneers of algebra. Not necessarily easy reading especially regarding the use of category theory, for one new to it , but develops mathematical maturity and conceptual connections nicely. Covers just about all the algebra a typical undergraduate is likely to cover likely more, depending on ones emphasis.

I'm going to soon review the 3rd edition of Saunders MacLane And Garrett Birkoff's Algebra at my blog soon and this is the first time I'm really carefully reading it. While I'm really enjoying the book,I've got a real dilemma gnawing at me. What kinds of students can this book be used for in ? I understand from professors who were students at Harvard that MacLane himself would use the book-in all it's versions, from the first mimeographed drafts in the early 's to the 3rd edition he used in his last teaching days in the mid's-for both undergraduate and graduate courses in algebra depending on the strength of the students, which would vary enormously from class to class.
