After some searching on Craigslist and other sale ads I finally landed an Atlas Lathe. The machine as I found it had no tooling and instead of a compound slide and cross slide had some sort of T slotted table. Well the price was right and I could not pass it up for better or worse. This section of the website will detail what i done to recondition or fix the lathe. Notice I did not say restore the machine, although along the way she did get some new parts. So hang out and follow along as I get Bertha back in running order and hopefully start making things with the machine.

It's an Atlas TH I found some parts diagrams online, but no manuals. Does anybody have a pdf? We pulled off all the accessories to make it easier to move. It had a lot of oil on it, but better that than rust. It's in better condition than it looks, but it is pretty dirty. One of the head gears has a broken tooth. Is that bad enough to need replacing?

I plan on pulling the whole thing apart anyway. Do the back gears do anything besides lock the head in place? I'm missing the gear guard and the rear countershaft assembly.

If anybody has a countershaft or motor pulley they'd like to part with, please let me know. It came with this turret which is very smooth and only missing the two knobs. I saw in an old catalog that it originally went for almost the price of the entire lathe. Made in germany. The other piece is still attached to the head.

I couldn't find any info on this. Does anybody know anything about it? Is it a decent chuck? I saw in other threads that the Atlas Lathe Operation is a good book to get. The Back Gears Are Back Gears To engage the back gears on these lathes, not only do you have to flip the lever on the head stock towards you, but you also have to pull the pin to the neutral position on the right most spindle gear.

Feel around the right side of the larger spindle gear, in the recess, there should be a pin. Engage the pin push left fully and disengage the back gear lever to run higher speeds. Pull the pin all the way out to the stop and engage back gears to run at very slow, but higher torque speeds. There are gears inside the step pulley in the head stock. These are what completing the drive train via the back gears ends up turning. Most of the tooth is still there.

I looked at VFDs but they were pretty costly. VFD or DC. It's not as costly as you probably expect, just hafta know how and where to look.

The FIRST way to do it, is to watch Craigslist and local ad-papers for someone with a used treadmill to give away for free. Electric treadmills either have a spring-sheave variable speed sigh or a neat little DC motor and a control circuit for variable speed Pay dirt! Liberate a DC drive from a treadmill, and put a muffin-fan on the side of the motor, and you're on!

If finding a treadmill isn't in the cards, check out the online surplus places www. But a VFD really isn't that expensive, considering what you get in return. They're less than half the price of a v job. ANY online surplus or auction place is a good source. There's probably one sitting around a local industrial place, or even a scrapyard, that'll work okay.

I think HGRSurplus. I've found that the v class of VFDs and small HP electric motors are so plentiful, that it's a whole lot cheaper to go high-voltage, and use the transformer method.

Wire up the transformer so that you're feeding vac IN, and getting out. Put a switch on the vac input, program your VFD, and you're in business. DC is nice, but you'll really, really like the VFD.
